FAQ

A horizontal shaft impact crusher (HSI crusher) breaks material using a high-speed rotating rotor fitted with blow bars (hammers). As material enters the crushing chamber, the blow bars strike it at high velocity, throwing it against stationary impact aprons (curtains). The material rebounds and is struck again until it is small enough to exit through the gap between the rotor and the lowest apron. The result is a cubical product with a high reduction ratio — typically 6:1 to 10:1 in a single pass.

An HSI (horizontal shaft impact) crusher uses a horizontally mounted rotor to strike material with blow bars — it is suited for primary and secondary crushing of a wide range of feed sizes and materials. A VSI (vertical shaft impact) crusher uses a vertically mounted rotor to accelerate material outward against a surrounding anvil ring — it is limited to fine, tertiary crushing and is primarily used for shaping aggregate and producing manufactured sand. GELEN manufactures both HSI and VSI series.

GELEN HSI impact crushers are suitable for soft to medium-hard materials with compressive strength up to approximately 200 MPa. Common applications include limestone, dolomite, gypsum, river gravel, sandstone, recycled concrete, recycled asphalt (RAP), demolition debris, and industrial minerals such as coal, phosphate and barite. For highly abrasive materials with high silica content (granite, basalt, quartzite), a cone crusher may offer lower wear cost per ton.

Choose PDK series for primary crushing of large feed material (up to 1,300 mm) — ideal for limestone quarries and demolition recycling. Choose SDK or DST series for secondary crushing of pre-reduced material — SDK for hard quarry minerals, DST for river gravel. Choose TDK series for tertiary crushing and fine aggregate production. GELEN impact crushers are designed for fast, safe blow bar exchange. After applying lockout/tagout procedures, the crusher box is opened hydraulically and the rotor is secured with the locking device. Blow bars slide out laterally using the optional lifting tool (no steel hammers required). New bars are installed in matched pairs by weight tolerance. The complete change on a PDK series crusher can be completed by two operators in under 60 minutes.
